Circulation of Knowledge and the Production of Scientific Facts: Proposing an Analytical Trajectory for Texts in Science Education

In this study, considering the interrelationship between epistemology and language, based on the theories of Ludwik Fleck and Mikhail Bakhtin, we propose an analytical trajectory for texts that circulate scientific knowledge. For this, we first give visibility to the way Fleck intertwines the social, the language (and the text) and the epistemological. Then, we present elements of Bakhtin’s philosophy of language that can analytically and theoretically deepen the social-linguistic dimension of textual productions in science. This theoretical articulation, among such authors, is systematized through questions that may enable researchers and Higher Education professors or Basic Education teachers to reflect on the role of the various texts that circulate scientific knowledge. Ludwik Fleck as a theorist of thought as res gestae — or, Does a pair of dots in Swedish matter?

Fleck's " comparative epistemology " approached its main object, thought, as human action. Using English and Swedish translations as test cases, this article ascribes significance to Fleck's preference for the verb denken in forming his core terminology (Denkstil, Denkkollektiv, Denkverkehr). Fleck referred to " thinking " (the word he preferred in English) as Tätigkeit. This is juxtaposed with an anglophone tradition in intellectual history harking back to Collingwood and speech-act philosophy. Still, Fleck's stress on the profoundly social nature of denken (always being interaction) is his distinctive characteristic as a theorist of thought as things done. Furthermore, Fleck's approach was formed to deal with any kind of thought, and this was important to his dealing with the special cases of science. The term Denkverkehr (" traffic/intercourse " in thought) is also examined within an argument stressing the deliberateness of Fleck's linguistic choices and his flair for pursuing deeply serious intents by means of playfulness and humor.

We present the results of research on writing as a possibility of expression for pupils thinking in science classes, during a study of Photosynthesis.. The support framework is discourse analysis as presented by Eni Orlandi, with an emphasis on the notion of authorship. We analyze nine productions, written in the form of scientific fiction, letter or logbook. The results show the nonoccurrence of empirical repetition, and in the meaning production by the students there were many manifestations of historic repetition. Considerations of the potential for writing in science teaching with similar conditions to the ones of the study presented here are made.

WRITING IN SCIENCE AND IN SCIENCE CLASSES: DIALOGUES WITH FRITZ MÜLLER AND CHARLES DARWIN

Characterizing the roles of writing in the production and dissemination of scientific knowledge from an analysis of the dialogue, by mail, between Charles Darwin and Fritz Müller, and with this, to identify the evidences to question their exercise in science teaching at school was the aim in this research. For this, we did the reading and a content analysis of the letters exchanged between the evolutionist and the naturalist, during years 1865-82, the selection of extracts and, based on categories by Polish epistemologist Ludwik Fleck, we have discussed some relations between the writing practice by the scientist and the aims of this same practice for apprehension, elaboration and communication of scientific knowledge by the student, in science teaching at school.

Stimmung/Nastrój as Content of Modern Science: On Musical Metaphors in Ludwik Fleck’s Theory of Thought Styles and Thought Collectives

Thought style and thought collective are two well-known concepts from Ludwik Fleck’s theory of science, which he originally formulated in Polish and German. This paper contends that these two concepts cannot be fully understood without a third—Stimmung/nastrój, which is one of the musical metaphors that play an important role in Fleck’s thinking. Because it is most often translated into English as “mood”, Fleck’s musical metaphors are mostly lost in translation, appearing as mere rhetoric. Only if and when we understand Stimmung/nastrój in the musical meaning of attunement, we can fully understand thought collectives, for which Stimmung/nastrój is sine qua non, and thought style, which appears if and when a collective turns out to be an enduring and not a momentary one.

Translation collective, translation styles: On the experience of translating Ludwik Fleck into Brazilian Portuguese

In this contribution I intend to describe the experience of translating Fleck’s Entstehung und Entwicklung einer wissenschaftlichen Tatsache into Brazilian Portuguese, an endeavor carried out alongside Prof. Georg Otte and with the technical revision and foreword by Prof. Mauro Condé, published in Brazil in 2010. As the first translation of this author into Portuguese, we had the extraordinary responsibility of setting Fleck’s concepts in the new language, a crucial goal in philosophical translations. Beyond creating a glossary, it was necessary to preserve part of Fleck’s style and what he produces in the source language. On a lexical level, this meant considering expressions frequently used, as well as neologisms, archaisms, mots rares, self-references or references to a tradition. This paper aims to demonstrate that a qualitative change in the use of language to codify social practices and technological developments was an essential point in the construction of the so-called scientific revolution. In other words, alongside the social and technological settings developing in the European context from the fifteenth to seventeenth centuries, the pragmatic-linguistic codifications that emerged in this process were essential for the construction of modern science. The role of language in this process, which is understood from this pragmatic viewpoint, is called here the linguistic thesis on the scientific revolution.
